Fairland’s Derric Lollar – Character Counts Presented By Grand Savings Bank
- Updated: May 1, 2020
Derric Lollar is setting himself no small goals for this year’s baseball season at Fairland High School.
“I play catcher, and I want to have a batting average of .500 or above,” Lollar said. “I want to be a good leader and example for the younger kids, and I want to make as many hustle plays as possible.”
For a 15 year old sophomore, Lollar is pretty tuned in on the sport he’s been playing since his tee ball days.
“I love how the game is a challenge,” he said. “I try to model my game after Buster Posey, because of how well he receives and is always paying attention to what he needs to do. He always knows where he needs to be in order for the next out to be made.”
Baseballs aren’t the only thing he’s looking down the sights for, because when Lollar steps off the field and has some free time, he’s looking to bag his next deer, coyote, dove, duck, squirrel or rabbit. He also said his favorite class is math.
Lollar said he has a lot of respect for his baseball coach, Chad Ross, who he said has given him a lot of opportunities, and shown him how good he can be at the game.
“He’s been patient with me, and helped me fix a lot of things,” Lollar said. “That’s important. The way you treat people and act around them, having respect and kindness, it’s important, and helpful to me as a player.”
