The Adair Athlete of the month is fastpitch softball player Sayge Vickrey. She is entering her junior season and is starting at shortstop for the Lady Warriors after playing third base as a sophomore.
Vickrey had an impressive season last year with an on base percentage of .480 with over 20 RBIs and only one strikeout. After last seasons success she has big goals for her junior season.
“I’m hoping to bat .500, hit three or four homeruns, commit less than seven errors and have less than three strikeouts,” said Vickrey.
A shoulder injury kept Vickrey from playing travel ball this summer and it was possible she might not be ready for this season. She did six months of physical therapy and worked on fundamentals to get herself ready for the season.
Adair is off to a 7-1 start so far this season, which according to Vickrey is a little surprising to even the team.
“We’re realizing that we’re better than we thought after losing a bunch of seniors from last year,” said Vickrey, “Winning our first district game against Lincoln Christian was a big step for us as a team.”
Because of the loss of several seniors Vickrey has also taken on more of a leadership role this season.
“I’m just trying to keep everyone’s energy and attitude up during the game, we’ve had a little trouble at times this season being sluggish. So, I feel like that’s part of my role is just holding everyone accountable to play to our ability,” said Vickrey.
Outside of softball Vickrey does well in the classroom maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is also involved in FFA showing cattle and as a member of the horse evaluation team.
