OFFENSE
The Hornets look to spread the ball around and utilize explosive athletes on the roster and an intelligent quarterback who brings athleticism to the position. Price Ward (6-2, 180, Jr.) takes over giving the Hornets a dual-threat QB. Ward can make most throws asked of him and has an excellent deep ball. Kyron Downing (6-0, 170, So.) rushed for 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. Downing will play a major role again this season. Lance Mason (6-0, 165, Sr.) could become the go-to receiver for Ward. Last season Mason had eight TDs and could see that number soar this season. Running back Gabe Brown (5-10, 165, Jr.) averaged 6.5 yards per carry in 2018. Devon Allen (5-10, 160, Sr.) is another wideout ready to make his mark on the program. Nick Devore (6-2, 245, Sr.) is an outstanding lineman and will start at guard. “We have a chance to light the scoreboard up this season,” said coach Matt Suffal. “After averaging 33 points a game last year, if our O-line, who will be young, can come together, we will average more points this year.”
DEFENSE
Brennen Stephens (6-0, 245, Jr.) packs a wallop at defensive end. His ability to turn the corner and get after the quarterback will help the defense this season. Dillon Campbell (5-10, 195, Sr.) plays linebacker with Jayden Goins (6-0, 165, Sr.). Outside linebacker Zane Young (5-11, 170, Sr.) has the speed to pursue running backs and the athleticism to drop in coverage. Mason will start at one of the corner spots while Erwin Torres (5-10, 250, So.) is penciled in at defensive tackle. Torres is young but showed a lot of promise in spring practice.
