OFFENSE

The Verdigris Cardinals are confident and ready for what the 2019 season will bring. “We have a great group of high-character kids who have played for several years now,” said head coach Travis East. “We will rely on their experience and character to build this team into what it should be.” Working out of a spread offense, this team will look for a balanced attack. Eight returning starters will help this offense get off on the right foot. Offensive tackle Austin Woods (6-6, 280, Sr.) and guard Kyle Pickens (5-11, 220, Sr.) will be the strongholds up front. Hayden Jones (5-10, 180, Jr.) will likely see action as both quarterback and wide receiver this season. At tight end, Ty Moore (6-2, 210, Sr.) will be a huge asset to the offense. Wide receiver Toby Willis (5-8, 140, Sr.) will continue to be an offensive weapon utilized often. Last year Willis racked up 11 touchdowns and 894 receiving yards. Alec James (5-11, 175, Jr.) will also be a contributor at running back.

DEFENSE

The Cardinals’ 3-4 defense will implement a mixture of blitzes and coverages to keep opposing teams on their toes. Some guys will play key roles on both sides of the ball, including Austin Woods at defensive end, adding to his 44 tackles (nine for loss) and five sacks from last fall. Ty Moore will also contribute defensively after making 37 tackles (nine for loss) and a sack last year. Defensive lineman Evan Raines (6-3, 255, Jr.) will continue to bring his talent of taking out opposing quarterbacks. Last year Raines had seven sacks to add to 65 tackles (11 for loss). Safety Carson Calvert (6-0, 175, Jr.) will shore up the secondary, returning as the second-leading tackler. Look for linebackers Sloan Roller (6-0, 210, Sr.) and Alec Hess (5-11, 210, Jr.) to be at the top of their game. Last year Roller racked up an impressive 142 tackles (nine for loss) and five sacks. Opponents be warned.
