Nowata High School freshman golfer Maddox Bullen is the recipient of the Bartlesville Area Character Counts honor. Bullen finished up his freshman season with a tied for tenth place finish at the Class 2A state tournament.
“It was a big deal, that’s all I was trying to do going into it was place, wasn’t really expecting anything, but then in the opening round I shot a 71 and realized I could place so definitely a big deal for me,going and playing the course the day before helped a lot. I also putted and chipped really well on that first day also so that was huge.” said Bullen.
The 71 was a personal best for Bullen, who shot a 33 on the back nine. Maddox shot a 76 and 79 in his final two rounds to lock in the tenth place finish. His performance at State and the team winning regionals were his favorite moments of the season.
Bullen finished the season strong, but struggled early on shooting in the high 80s at the start of the season. Mason improved a lot as the season went on thanks to a lot of practice.
“I definitely improved a lot,” said Bullen, “just getting to play everyday for three or four months and throughout the season my scores kept getting lower and lower. My struggles early in the season led to more motivation and more improvement throughout the season.”
Bullen is also a kid that values character and tries his best to show it on and off the golf course. He also gave credit to some of his teammates.
“On the golf course just having good golf etiquette and being polite and being a good role model for the kids that are coming up. Off the course is kinda the same just being polite and having good morals and values. Our two seniors Luke Price and Alex really were great role models and have high character,” said Bullen
Besides golf Bullen also played basketball for the JV and Varsity teams at Nowata this season. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Bible Club.
