Ketchum’s Mattie Flanagan – Athlete Spotlight Presented by Bank of Grand Lake

Ketchum High School track standout Mattie Flanagan just completed her junior year and is looking forward to one more season on the track before she starts the next chapter of her life.

“This season was great, it showed me my weak areas that need improvement and also rewarded me with a few person bests,” said Flanagan. “I am going to be a senior next year and will be graduating in 2020. My plans after high school are to further my track career into collegiate sports as well as major in Pre-Veterinarian Science.”

Flanagan’s involvement in track started at a young age when most of her peers were involved in other sports.

“I have participated in track since elementary school, I had always loved it even from a young age. The events I compete in are long jump, high jump, 100m hurdles and 100m dash. I also compete in the Heptathlon during summer track,” she said.

Her involvement in school activities does not stop with the track team. Flanagan is involved in and serves as President of National Honor Society, Junior Class Lions Club, and Student Council. She is also a member of the FFA. In the fall she is a member of the cross country team and the varsity cheer squad. Flanigan loves competing and she loves her teammates.

“We are like family and they are a such a great support group. I was very happy to get to go to state with eight of my teammates this year,” said Flanagan. “The best thing about Ketchum athletics is definitely the support that we get from the coaches. They truly care about us and we appreciate them very much.”

Academics are always at the forefront for Flanagan. She has maintained a high GPA throughout her time in high school.

“Academics are highly regarded to me. I have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout high school so far. Without good grades I wouldn’t be able to do what I love,” she said.

Recently, Flanagan returned from a trip out of state and she is looking forward to starting her training for the next big event.

“I just got back from my vacation trip to Florida so now I’m ready to get into heptathlon training!”
