Oklahoma Union's Hunter Harris – Character Counts Presented by Welch State Bank

Oklahoma Union standout student-athlete, Hunter Harris, is currently playing for the varsity basketball team and head coach Lee Ott. Harris, a three-sport star, will take his talents to the next level and compete for a local university inside the state of Oklahoma.
“I started playing when I was in first grade. I also run track and play football. I plan on attending Oklahoma Wesleyan to run track,” said Harris. “I think what I love most about this [basketball] team is how fun and close we are. We’re always cracking jokes and having fun, but at the same time we know when to get serious and get the job done.”
This season Oklahoma Union is off to a great start ranked No. 6 in Class 2A with a record of 15-1. Their only defeat came at the hands of Class 4A Mannford during the Nowata tournament.
“This season has been going really good! We are 15-1 so far, and have had tons of dominating wins,” said Harris.
The Cougars have outscored opponents 1,176 to 579. Coach Ott has his team buying into this system and the record proves it works.
Harris considers his school work his top priority and keeping good grades is of the upmost importance.
“I think academics are very important. Keeping good grades will help me throughout my college career and help me get the job that I want,” said Harris.
Outside of sports, Harris is involved in Student Council, FFA and National Honor Society. Harris serves as class Vice President.
Harris believes he would not be where he is today without his coaches pushing him to reach his goals.
“On the court, my coach has been my biggest influence. Coach Ott has pushed me to be the best player that I can be, and he has believed in me since he started coaching me. Off the court, my family and my track coach have had the biggest influence on me. They have helped motivate me to reach my full potential, and I wouldn’t be where I am at without them,” said Harris.
Oklahoma Union will wrap up their regular season on February 11th at home against Nowata. District tournaments are set for February 15-16th, with regional tournaments on February 21-23rd. Area tournaments will take place on February 28th – March 2nd and the state tournament at the Big House is March 7-9th.
